Shimmy Shift Pivot
Examining the liminal spaces of healing, transformation, and community through dance, music, and film.
During COVID 2019, turbulent times widened the chasms between people, creating misunderstandings and resulting in collective reactions such as cancel culture. In response, Hanan Arts reminded us of our commonalities and the importance of keeping the dialogue open.
Over the period of 18 months, Shimmy Shift Pivot was produced as a thought-provoking webinar and workshop series that engaged leaders in the arts and academia to tackle divisive issues such as race, colonization, identity and gender violence as they were experienced through the lens of dance. It was an interactive, safe space for uncensored honest dialogue that built community through deeper understanding.
Artfully facilitated by scholar-artist and Hanan Arts Founder, Tiffany Madera, these conversations tackled the issues of our day with a new vernacular/framework that expanded our vision, empathy, connection and creativity.
Through the Shimmy Shift Pivot program, Hanan Arts engaged participants' minds and bodies to support healing and to create community. The topics unearthed in the webinars shaped part two of the series; the workshops facilitated by Tiffany Madera in historic Miami neighborhoods. These community workshops engaged participants' different learning styles through writing, discussion, movement, music, breathwork, and dance. Together, the webinar series created semantic memory and the workshop created embodied memory so that participants made the internal shifts needed to impact the external world.
